Today in the UK at least one in every 15 young people has experience of self harming, and over 170,000 people visit accident and emergency departments each year for help.
Stepping Stones are aware of the need to promote awareness of self injury, so we are pleased to shine a spotlight on an organisation who specialise in dealing with the problems that arise from it.
Self Injury Support is a national organisation that supports girls and women affected by self-injury or self-harm. They have carried out extensive research with women who self-injure, and through their work have developed a deep understanding of the reasons individuals harm themselves and of the things they may find helpful or supportive.
Their helpline, which deals with emotional support, listening and signposting for women affected by self injury is open Tuesday & Wednesday 7-9pm and Thursday 3-5pm. You can call in confidence on 0808 800 8088 since their number will not show up on phone bills.
They also offer a text and email service, open Sunday to Friday 7-9pm. You can either text 0780 047 2908 or visit their website and follow the links to their email address.
Both of these services are confidential and run by female volunteers.
Even if you aren’t affected from self harm, you can still donate to help their cause and fund their service. Text TESS14 followed by the amount you wish to donate to 70070.
